Prothom-Alo reported today that numbers of information technology Freelancers and outsourcing professionals in Bangladesh have recently been increased significantly. In a recent survey carried out by oDesk, a prominent freelancing job site, Bangladesh has been placed among the top 10 countries in the world with respect to the number of online IT freelancers. At present oDesk has some 500,000 registered freelancers. India is at the top of the list and Phillipines has secured a second place.

If we go by the City, then Dhaka, Bangladesh stands at the third position as the largest supplying city of online freelancers in the world after Chaadigarh and Mohali of India.

While this survey was carried out by a single job board, there are numerous other freelancing sites on which Bangladeshi freelancers are active. But this statistics definitely does represent an overall picture of the freelancing workforces in Bangladesh. At present there are some 1,500 registered Bangladeshi freelancers on oDesk.

It is however an expected result in consistent with the fact that information technology and service professionals in Bangladesh are growing with an accelerated rate. Not only in numbers but also in terms of quality, merit and spirit Bangladeshi IT professionals triumph despite all the struggles they have in terms of communication infrastructures, issues with payment processing, rigid government regulations etc. For an example Paypal, the worlds most important online payment system, is not yet available in Bangladesh.
